ANTIMICROBIAL / CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC - SULFONAMIDE

Jar x 250, 450 and 700 g

Formula:
Sulfamethoxazole 62.5 g.; Trimethoprim 12.5 g.; Excip. q.s. 100.00 g.

Indications:
For sport horses exclusively. Indicated for acute respiratory conditions of bacterial origin (pneumonia, bronchitis, laryngitis, pleuritis). Urogenital conditions (nephritis, pyelonephritis, metritis, cystitis, vaginitis). Digestive conditions (enteritis, diarrhea, peritonitis, intestinal infarction, Colitis X, neonatal foal diarrhea). Actinobacillosis, septic arthritis, equine strangles (adenitis), omphalitis, osteomyelitis, etc. Spectrum of action: Actinomyces spp., Actinobacillus spp., Aeromonas spp., Bordetella spp., Corynebacterium spp., E. coli, Fusiformis spp., Klebsiella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Moraxella bovis, Nocardia spp., Pasteurella spp., Proteus spp., Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Staphylococcus spp. (including penicillinase-producing strains), Streptococcus spp. (including enterococci and diplococci), Campylobacter spp. Do not administer to horses intended for human consumption.

Dosage and methods of administration:

Oral administration. May be given alone, mixed with molasses or honey, or mixed with the usual feed (small amount) moistened with water (so that the powder adheres to the feed), and wait until the animal has fully consumed it before offering the remaining feed.

Warning:
If mixed with honey, molasses or feed, any portion not consumed that day must be discarded.
The sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim mixture should be formulated in a 25:5 ratio, and the recommended dose for this combination in horses given orally is 30 mg/kg bw every 12 hours. For respiratory tract infections: 15 to 30 mg/kg bw every 12 hours. As a practical guide, give a 500 kg horse 20 g of Sulfa-Trim twice a day. In cases of severe respiratory infections, the dose may be increased to up to 40 g of Sulfa-Trim twice a day. Under normal circumstances treatment should not exceed 7 days. If a favorable response is observed within 72 hours, treatment should be continued until 48 hours after symptoms subside, to prevent relapse and the emergence of resistance.
